TOP 5: Assassin's Creed Original Characters

[WARNING: WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR ANY AND ALL ASSASSIN'S CREED GAMES TO DATE]

Number Five: Ezio Auditore da Firenze
First Appearance: Assassin's Creed 2

Ezio is the Italian protagonist of Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations. Ezio begins his journey as a carefree Italian boy who goes around getting into fights and screwing girls. After his father is framed for treason and half his family is executed, Ezio is forced to take up his father's mantle as an Assassin working under Lorenzo de Medici in a quest for vengeance. Ezio is an interesting character because you are able to see him mature between being a boy out for revenge, to eventually becoming the Mentor of the Assassin's Order in Brotherhood and learning that there is more to his war with the Templars than just a self-journey for revenge.

Number Four: Shaun Hastings
First Appearance: Assassin's Creed 2

Shaun Hastings is a member of the Assassin's Order in the modern day setting of 2012, aiding Desmond, Lucy, and Rebecca in their quest to train Desmond and stop Abstergo from controlling the globe. Initially, Shaun comes off as kind of a jack-ass. He constantly talks to Desmond and Rebecca as if they have trouble understanding him. If the player chooses to talk to Shaun during the modern-portions of the games, more of his backstory becomes revealed. Shaun wasn't born into the Assassin's Order like Desmond or Lucy, but was a computer hacker who hacked Abstergo and began exposing their work online. Rebecca happened to come across his articles and contacted him before Abstergo was able to kill him, and he became a master at information working for the Assassin's Order. Shaun provides much of the comic-relief that is needed between the serious tone of the games.

Number Three: Altair Ibn La Ahad
First Appearance: Assassin's Creed

Altair is the protagonist of the original Assassin's Creed game as well as the secondary protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Altair is an interesting character, because unlike Ezio, the player is not introduced to Altair at the beginning of his Assassin journey, but rather in the middle of it. From the beginning of the game, the player can tell that Altair is very skilled at what he does, but he does have a sort of arrogance and overconfidence that takes the "assassin" out of his character. Assassin's Creed is basically the story of how Altair slowly begins to humble himself and shape himself into the Assassin who would eventually discover many of the darkest secrets the world would hold.

Number Two: Warren Vidic
First Appearance: Assassin's Creed

Warren Vidic is introduced as the "evil scientist" who has taken Desmond Miles captive in order to find the locations of the Pieces of Eden from his ancestor's memories. Although it is unknown how high in ranking Vidic is within the Templar order, it is known that he is within their "Inner Sanctum," so while he is not their leader, he is pretty high up. Vidic is also responsible for two other major plans within the Templar Order that make him a dangerous foe. He was the man who originally found a boy named Daniel Cross who would become Subject 4 in the Animus project and unknowingly a sleeper agent for the organization. Daniel would later go on to kill the leader of the Assassin's Order, as Vidic had planned. He is also responsible for "Project Siren," perhaps one of the most shocking plans in the series. Vidic had his assistant, Lucy Stillman, pretend to still be allied with the assassins and break Desmond out of Abstergo in attempt to have him work under a stable environment. Meanwhile, Vidic was directly communicating with Lucy, discovering the locations of the Pieces of Eden and the nature of Those Who Came Before. Unfortunately, this plan failed and Vidic was forced to train new recruits into the Templar Order using the same "bleeding effect" that was used to train Desmond. Vidic eventually sent these recruits to track down Desmond's father, the current de-facto leader of the Assassin Order.

Number One: Clay Kaczmarek AKA "Subject 16"
First Appearance: Assassin's Creed

Clay Kaczmarek, or as he is referred to in the games, Subject 16, is a distant relative of Desmond's who was experimented on by Abstergo prior to Desmond's capture. Clay and Desmond both shared Ezio Auditore as a common ancestor, though it is currently unknown by what means. During his sessions, Clay began to experience extreme signs of health decline due to overexposure to the Animus. Much like Desmond, Clay would sneak around Abstergo at night and have his own Animus sessions, in which he learned many revelations, such as the origins of Adam and Eve and Those Who Came Before. Clay eventually learned how Lucy had betrayed the Assassin's Order, and was planning on using the next subject, Desmond Miles, in order to help Abstergo take over the globe. In order to pass these messages on to Desmond, Clay reprogrammed parts of the Animus, including putting part of his consciousness within the machine, before ultimately committing suicide and leaving messages for Desmond in his blood all over the walls of Abstergo Industry. While Clay is technically "dead" during the events of the series, his glyph puzzles give cryptic information to Desmond of the grand history of the Assassins, Templars, and Pieces of Eden. Eventually, in Revelations, Clay appears to Desmond in his unconscious, trying to help him wake up and eventually sacrificing the bit of consciousness he stored in the Animus to save Desmond's. Clay Kaczmarek is easily the most interesting character in the Assassin's Creed series and deserves the number 1 spot for that.
