ARTICLE: X-Men: Days of Future Past is X4

Since its announcement, X-Men: Days of Future Past has had an extreme amount of mystery surrounding it. While the title would seem to suggest that time-travel would play a prominent role in the plot, the nature of such was kept very hidden until recently.

Back in November 2012, Bryan Singer, the film's director and writer, confirmed that both Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart would reprise their roles as Magneto and Professor X alongside Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy in this X-Men: First Class sequel.

This casting decision obviously gave away the fact that time-travel would indeed be used in the film, but many, including myself, simply believed an alternate, dystopian future would be created, similar to the one found in the Days of Future Past comics, to allow for the future Magneto and Professor X to appear.

Patrick Stewart (left) and James McAvoy (right) as Charles Xavier
At San-Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that X-Men: Days of Future Past would not only be a direct-sequel to X-Men: First Class, but also a direct-sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand. How is this possible, you may ask? Since time-travel will be prominent in the film, two concurrent storylines will take place: one happening ten years after the events of First Class and one happening ten years after the events of The Last Stand. So in some ways, this movie is actually X4.

This is how characters from the original trilogy such as Halle Berry's Storm, Anna Paquin's Rogue, and Shawn Ashmore's Iceman will return and once again play prominent roles in the film alongside characters from the prequel such as Nicholas Hoult's Beast, Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and Lucas Till's Havok.

Halle Berry will return as Storm for the first time since 2006's The Last Stand

In case you did not know, Bryan Singer wrote and directed both X1 and X2, but made the decision to depart before X3. He later returned to write X-Men: First Class. In some ways, this movie will give the power of the X-Men franchise back to Singer, as he makes a full circle and connection between his original movies and his newer one: First Class. This almost seems as a way for Singer to erase the events of The Last Stand, which ruined many of the plans he had for his characters.

When Singer was still on-board for the sequel to X2, he planned it as a two-part film that would encompass both X3 and X4. This two-part storyline was to explore the Phoenix Force, much like The Last Stand did. Singer also intended to introduce the Hellfire Club and Emma Frost, the villains of his later movie First Class, who would have played a similar role to Magneto in The Last Stand who tried to use Phoenix's power for his own benefit. Unfortunately, Singer left the project which caused the new writers to try and use the scraps of his ideas to make X3.

In Days of Future Past, Singer will erase some of the key plot-points of The Last Stand to make a bright future for the X-Men series. Firstly, Singer has undone Professor X's death, which was hinted in a post-credits scene in The Last Stand where Professor X transferred his consciousness into the body of his twin brother moments before he died. Secondly, the entire "Mutant Cure" plotline is being completely erased, so fear not X-Men fans, characters like Rogue, Iceman and Magneto will get their powers back!

Magneto (Ian McKellan) lost his powers during the climax of The Last Stand

There are, however, some unfortunate things that The Last Stand did that Bryan Singer will be unable to erase with this film. The first, and perhaps most upsetting plot-point that Singer won't be able to erase is the death of Cyclops at the hands of Jean Grey. Cyclops does not have powers that would enable him to come back from death or survive it, like Charles Xavier does. Even if Singer were to somehow say Cyclops survived, the question of where he was during the events of The Last Stand and why he did not help the X-Men stop Jean Grey would be a major plot-hole in the series.

The second thing that Bryan Singer will not be able to erase in this film is the death of Jean Grey. As any reader of the comics knows, Jean Grey's death is rarely ever final, as the Phoenix Force constantly resurrects her. The reason I say he cannot undo her death in this film is because Jean Grey was turned into the Omega-level mutant known as Phoenix in The Last Stand, meaning if she were to come back to life in this film, she would either be a major ally or enemy of the X-Men. In either case, she would leave the antagonists of the film, Bolivar Trask, completely obsolete, as her presence in the film would lead to two outcomes: either Jean Grey has control of the Phoenix Force, meaning she could basically end Trask's tyranny with the snap of her finger or Jean Grey does not have control of the Phoenix Force, meaning she would be a much greater threat than Trask and his Sentinels. This is why Jean Grey's death cannot be undone in Days of Future Past, but there is potential for Singer to maybe bring her back in a later film.

Neither James Marsden (left) nor Famke Janssen (right) will return as Cyclops or Jean Grey
The only other info known about the film is that Wolverine will be the key to connecting both the timelines. The Wolverine from the original timeline will be sent back in time to First Class' timeline in hopes of changing the dystopian future brought on by Bolivar Trask and his Sentinels. How exactly this will play out is unknown, but I'm sure Wolverine won't be the only of the original X-Men to be sent back in time.

This movie is going to be HUGE. The principle cast consists of twenty actors playing eighteen characters between the two concurrent timelines. Aside from the ones mentioned, other characters returning from the original movies consist of Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde and Peter Rasputin as Colossus, starring alongside the First Class stars and newcomers Omar Sy as Bishop, Fan Bingbing as Blink, Adan Canto as Sunspot, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart as Warpath, and Josh Helman and Peter Dinklage playing the film's antagonists William Stryker and Bolivar Trask respectively.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage will play the film's antagonist, Bolivar Trask
X-Men: Days of Future Past is still almost a year away from hitting theaters, with a release date of May 23, 2014. Singer has stated that this will be his biggest movie ever, which comes as no surprise. Since Singer has decided to connect First Class to the originals, rather than using it to reboot the franchise, Days of Future Past will be a hit or a miss. It will either pick up the shattered pieces that The Last Stand created or spiral the entire franchise into so much dismay that it can never be saved again. Thankfully, I am confident that Singer will make this the best X-Men movie yet, as his X-Men movies have so far gotten better and better with each installment.

The only problem now is the year-long wait for this epic movie to release.

TOP 100 Nintendo Enemies (1-5)

Don't forget to hit subscribe at the bottom of the page! It would be much appreciated and help you to keep up with all our updates!

Number 5
King Dedede
Series: Kirby
King Dedede (Kirby Super Star Ultra)
King Dedede is the greedy and gluttonous ruler of Dream Land and one of the main antagonists of the Kirby series. While not always appearing in a villainous role, Dedede is known for being a cruel monarch, stealing food from his entire land on multiple occasions to support his gluttonous and slothful lifestyle. There are a few occasions in which Dedede helps save Dream Land, but it can only be assumed he does this so that he can continue to exploit his people and suck them dry of their resources. No matter how many times Kirby takes this guy out, he never learns his lesson. It may be time for a revolution in Dream Land.

Number 4
Wario
Series: Super Mario/Wario Land
Wario (Wario World)
Wario is the pure embodiment of greed. He has one sole purpose in life and it is to make as much cash as quickly as possible, no matter who he harms in the process. He has appeared as a villain in quite a few Mario titles, but the true extent of Wario's villainy is displayed in games where he is the protagonist. In every single one of the Wario Land or WarioWare games, Wario displays everything wrong in a protagonist. Many of the "villains" in his games are actually just trying to stop Wario from being so greedy, as Wario ravages lands or exploits people to make a quick buck. You know a guy is pretty bad when he is the bad guy in his own games!

Number 3
Ridley
Series: Metroid
Omega-Ridley (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption)
The villainous leader of the Space Pirates and the last known Space Dragon in existence, Ridley has haunted Samus Aran throughout her entire career. Ridley was the one who killed Samus' parents, leaving her without a family and indirectly causing her to become the bounty hunter she is today. No matter how many times Samus has killed Ridley, he always comes back. The Space Pirates use every resource they can possibly find to make sure that their vigorous and powerful leader never stays dead, whether it be through cybernetic enhancements, Phazon-injection or cloning, Ridley's death is never final. Since even death cannot stop Ridley's rampage, it is no doubt that he is the single biggest threat that the universe may have ever known.

Number 2
Bowser
Series: Super Mario
Bowser (Super Smash Bros. For Wii U)
Bowser, the King of Koopas and persistent nemesis of Mario is one of the most iconic and recognizable enemies in all of Nintendo. The King of Koopas needs no explanation for why he is this high on the list. Since 1985, this giant fire-breathing turtle has been kidnapping princesses and taking over the Mushroom Kingdom since before video games were a big thing. He never fails to find new ways to battle Mario, whether it be in his Koopa Clown Car or a giant Hot Tub inside a volcano, this baddy never fails to terrorize the plumber in any way possible. And let's not forget, this baddy doesn't just want to stop Mario, but he wants to stop anyone else who wants to stop Mario, as seen in the many Mario RPG games where he teams up temporarily with the plumber to make sure that only he can conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and marry Princess Peach. This lovable enemy is, of course, only second to one...

Number 1
Ganon
Series: The Legend of Zelda
The Many Incarnations of Ganon
The Leader of the Gerudos. The Prince of Thieves. The King of Darkness. Ganon, the powerful and black-hearted enemy of all things good is our top Nintendo enemy, and for good reason. Ganon first debuted as a giant blue pig, wielding a trident and the Triforce of Power as he stole Princess Zelda and conquered all of Hyrule. Throughout his many appearances, Ganon has grown as a character, becoming darker and more powerful every time. Ocarina of Time explained how Ganon used to be Ganondorf, a powerful Gerudo warlock who broke into the Sacred Realm and claimed the Power of the Gods for himself. Despite only having one-third of the Triforce, Ganon has been able to conquer Hyrule countless times, with his death rarely ever being final. You also have to remember, almost every Zelda game features a different Link and a different Zelda, but Ganon is always the same. This same one monster has fought dozens of variations of the heroes and in some continuities, prevailed over them. There is a reason Ganon is known as the King of Darkness, because he is the baddest of the bad, and will forever be the greatest enemy the Nintendo universe has ever known.

TOP 100 Nintendo Enemies (6-10)

Just a reminder, if you enjoy our blog, hit the subscribe button at the bottom of the screen to keep up with all our articles and updates!

Number 10
Meta-Knight
Series: Kirby
Meta-Knight (Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land)
Perhaps one of the most iconic and mysterious enemies in Nintendo history, Meta-Knight starts our Top 10. Meta-Knight is a reoccurring enemy of Kirby. While he may not be "evil," per-say, he does oppose Kirby on multiple occasions, usually trying to stop him from stupidly released an ancient evil as he has a tendency to do. Meta-Knight himself has proven to be a respectful and honorable opponent for Kirby, always providing him with a sword before they do battle. There was one occasion, however, where Meta-Knight tried to take over Dream Land using the Halberd, but this was likely to stop something far more powerful from taking over, such as Galacta Knight. In the end, Meta-Knight is a fantastic enemy, and while he may not be evil, he will always be one of the best Kirby enemies of all time.

Number 9
Fawful
Series: Mario & Luigi
Fawful (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story)
Fawful may not be the most iconic or exposed Nintendo villain, but he is easily one of the best there is. Fawful made his debut in the first Mario & Luigi game where he served his mistress Cackletta. Despite not being the primary antagonist, Fawful made a huge impact on the fans with his wacky and mischievous, yet cunningly wicked personality. He reappeared in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, doing shady, back-alley deals with Baby Mario & Baby Luigi. He once again returned to the mantle of antagonist in Bowser's Inside Story, where he used Bowser to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. He then kidnapped Princess Peach to combine himself with the Dark Star and become the pure embodiment of darkness, as he proclaimed when he screamed "I HAVE DARKNESS!" It took the combined might of both the Mario Brothers and Bowser to stop him and finally lay the dark Beanbean to rest.

Number 8
Wolf O'Donnell
Series: Star Fox
Wolf (Star Fox: Assault)
Wolf O'Donnell is the leader of the criminal organization Star Wolf in the Star Fox franchise. Right from his introduction, gamers knew Wolf was one bad-ass guy. The bitter rivalry between him and Fox was evident from the moment he came on-screen, and he was the perfect villain for Fox. While Andross may have been the more immense threat, Wolf had personal vendettas against Fox and his team. Sure, he was hired by Andross to take them down, but the fact that he wanted them dead was just a bonus. Even in the moments where Wolf aided Fox or saved his life, you could tell that the partnership was only temporary so Wolf could bring Fox to his demise himself. There is no rivalry in Nintendo that is as heated as the one between Wolf and Fox, which earns the vicious bounty hunter a spot in our Top 10.

Number 7
Giovanni
Series: Pokemon
Giovanni (Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen)
As stated earlier on the list, Team Rocket was the best villainous team in the Pokemon series. At the helm of this cruel team is their cold-hearted leader Giovanni. Ontop of his duties as the head of what is basically the "Pokemon Mafia," he is also the Viridian City Gym Leader, although he is rarely ever at his post, making sure that barely anyone gets to go to the Indigo League. While some may think that Giovanni wasn't that bad, they are forgetting some key facts. Giovanni is the one who is responsible for the cloning of Mew, an unethical and cruel project that put the poor Pokemon through immense amount of suffering and creating Mewtwo, who in turn, was used as a weapon and whose only purpose was to be the ultimate Pokemon. Mewtwo went through a tragic upbringing, and it was all due to this horrible man who only wished to have the most powerful Pokemon in existence. In addition, the rival character in Pokemon Gold & Silver talks about his hatred for Team Rocket, which all stemmed from him being abused and neglected by his father, who was none other than their leader, Giovanni. This cruel and black-hearted man is much more than just a leader of a band of thieves, and his lack of empathy and morality puts him up there with some of the most black-hearted Nintendo enemies.

Number 6
King K. Rool
Series: Donkey Kong
King K. Rool (Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber)
The villainous and power-hungry leader of the Kremlings is not a man to underestimate. This villain, unlike most, is able to learn from his mistakes. Once he was defeated by Donkey Kong once, he made sure to capture him so that he could not interfere with his plans again. He captured him not once, but twice, in addition to capturing many of the other Kongs on multiple occasions. He is also a master of personas, taking on the characters of Kaptain K. Rool and Baron K. Roolenstein throughout his career. He is known for brutally punishing minions who fail him, even executing some of them on the spot. His plans usually include him stealing Donkey Kong's bananas in hopes of luring him into his clutches and taking over DK Isle. This menace to all things monkey is not a force to be reckoned with.

TOP 100 Nintendo Enemies (11-20)

Number 20
Dimentio
Series: Paper Mario
Dimentio (Super Paper Mario)
The true antagonist of Super Paper Mario whose careful planning almost lead him to destroy all of existence. Dimentio is introduced to the player as the servant of Count Bleck, but he mysteriously aids Mario and friends from time to time, leading him on to be an ally of sorts. He also takes a liking to Luigi, and even brainwashes him into the evil Mr. L. It is revealed at the game's climax that Dimentio used Count Bleck in order for the heroes to waste the power of the Pure Hearts, so that when Dimentio took control of the void, there would be no power to stop him and his puppet: Luigi. Unfortunately, Dimentio meets a bitter and cruel end when the power of the Pure Hearts returns, but his demise came at the cost of the redeemed Count Bleck's life.

Number 19
Bowser Jr.
Bowser Jr. (Super Mario Sunshine)
Since his first appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr has become more and more of a threat to Mario. In recent appearances, he can be shown as the one leading Bowser's armies and directly interfering with Mario, whereas Bowser has taken the backseat and serves as the final boss. Bowser Jr may lack the brute strength and power that Bowser has, but he is a cunning mastermind waiting to sprout, and will one day take over his father's legacy and become a bigger threat to the Mushroom Kingdom than anyone could have anticipated.

Number 18
Andross
Series: Star Fox
Andross (Star Fox 64)
Andross is the original villain of the Star Fox franchise. He is a giant, floating monkey head and a powerful scientist whose empire sits at the heart of Venom. In Star Fox 64, he kills James McCloud, forcing Fox into a mission of vengeance to try and stop the evil Emperor. Even after his death, Andross' spirit lingered on and almost destroyed Dinosaur Planet in attempt to resurrect his form and also protected a powerful weapon that was the key to neutralizing the toxic waters on Venom.

Number 17
Giygas
Series: EarthBound
Giygas (EarthBound)
Giygas is an evil alien who intends to sentence all reality to the horror of infinite darkness. He was raised by two abducted humans who unknowingly studied his PSI powers and escaped his planet. Giygas was then tasked by his people to ensure that PSI never spread to Earth, and was forced to attack and destroy the planet of the only people he ever cared for. In his rage and agony, Giygas is turned into the pure embodiment of hatred and darkness as he begins his quest to destroy the only people he ever loved.

Number 16
Vaati
Series: The Legend of Zelda
Vaati (The Minish Cap)
Vaati is the evil wind god who appears as the antagonist of the Four Sword games and their prequel, the Minish Cap. Vaati was a Minish Sorcerer who aspired for more, and eventually turned into the dark wind god. Link was tasked with sealing this evil into the Four Sword, where he slept for milennia before being awakened again. Vaati is memorable among Zelda fans as he was one of the first truly capable antagonist to be introduced to the series since Ganondorf.

Number 15
Ghetsis
Series: Pokemon
Ghetsis (Pokemon Black/White 2)
Ghetsis is the true leader of Team Plasma who appears as the antagonist in Pokemon Black and White and their sequels, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2. Ghetsis found N from an early age, and realizing he could speak to animals, brought him up as his son in order to exploit his powers for evil. Ghetsis used N to try and convince people that Pokemon were suffering and needed to be freed, when in reality, Ghetsis simply wanted to be the only one to control Pokemon in order to take over the world. In Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, Ghetsis has gone completely insane, and begins freezing all of Unova and almost kills the player character using Kyurem.

Number 14
Dark Samus
Series: Metroid
Dark Samus (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)
Dark Samus is the evil doppleganger of Samus that appears in the Metroid Prime franchise. Dark Samus originated as the Metroid Prime, but upon defeat, absorbed Samus' Phazon Suit to sustain a new form: thus becoming Dark Samus. Dark Samus then attacked multiple planets, attempting to corrupt the entire universe with Phazon, becoming one of the deadliest threats the Galactic Federation had ever seen.

Number 13
Ghirahim
    Series: The Legend of Zelda
Ghirahim (Skyward Sword)
Ghirahim is the self-proclaimed Demon Lord and main antagonist of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Ghirahim is one of the few antagonists in the Zelda series to actually become well-received upon debut. Unlike Ganondorf, Ghirahim likes to directly interfere with Link, rather than sit around and allow minions to do his dirty work for him. He is malicious, blood-thirsty and downright insane as his graceful, yet powerful character interferes with Link's quest time and time again. Even though he was simply a servant of Demise, Ghirahim made a much bigger impact than his master, and in the end, was a much better and more memorable villain.

Number 12
Porky
Series: EarthBound
Porky (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)
Pokey Minch, or Porky as he is more commonly known, is an antagonist that appears in both EarthBound and its sequel, MOTHER 3. Porky's family has always had a bitter taste for Ness and his family, as Ness' father borrowed a couple thousand dollars from them and never repaid it. Porky commits many crimes throughout the series, such as kidnapping Paula and trying to sacrifice her and aiding the evil alien Giygas in his quest for planetary destruction. Porky then becomes the King of New Pork City in Mother 3 and wreaks havoc to the people. This twisted child is one of the most evil and wicked characters in Nintendo history.

Number 11
Majora
Series: The Legend of Zelda
Skull Kid (Majora's Mask)
Majora is the monstrous evil that lives within the Majora's Mask and is responsible for the events of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Majora finds a host in the lonely Skull Kid, corrupting his mind and using him to try and destroy Termina using the Moon. Much like Ghirahim, Majora made a huge impact upon his debut, and while he has only appeared in one game, is still hailed as one of the greatest Zelda villains of all time. It is obvious that Majora's one goal is destruction, and were it not for Link, Clock Town would have met with a terrible fate.

Mother Brain
Series: Metroid
Mother Brain (Super Metroid)
Mother Brain is the Aurora Unit and Super Computer that is a high ranking member of the Space Pirates. Her origins are unknown, but she is speculated to either be an Aurora Unit hijacked and corrupted by the Space Pirates or a super-computer that was created by the Space Pirates. Her primary function is to organize the Space Pirate forces and bond with the Metroid species so that the Space Pirates can use them as bio-weapons against the Galactic Federation. In Super Metroid, she takes on a bipedal form to fight Samus, only being defeated when a baby Metroid turns on her and leaves her in a weakened state.

Metroid (Super Metroid)
The Metroids are the powerful bioweapons that appear in the Metroid franchise. They were created by the Chozo in order to combat a parasite known as X. For fans of the series, you will remember that before the days of the internet when the game came out, it was frustrating to fight this guy, as you had no idea what to do. He would just throw punches at you and absorb any hit you gave. But once you figured out how to take this guy down, it was the sweetest feeling.

Number 22
Masked Man
