Top 15 Duos in Gaming

There are a lot of stories in gaming that tell of a heroes epic quest to save their world. However, sometimes, the hero needs a partner to help him do the deed. Here are the Top 15 Duos in Gaming.

Number 15
Drake & Sully
Series: Uncharted
Nathan Drake & Victor Sullivan are an inseparable duo. What is an explorer without his pilot, best friend and father-figure? Since Nathan Drake was a kid, Victor Sullivan has been raising him as both a father and best friend, and in the Uncharted games, their bond is one that gets them out of a number of situations.

Number 14
Mario & Yoshi
Series: Super Mario / Yoshi's Island
Mario first met his green, dinosaur companion when he was just a wee lad. Yoshi took care of him and made sure he never fell into the clutches of the evil and tyrannical Baby Bowser. Mario returned the favour later in life when he saved Yoshi's entire species from Bowser's rampage, and ever since, they have been a duo that any gamer is happy to see.

Number 13
Cole & Zeke
Series: inFamous
Cole MacGrath and Zeke Dunbar are a perfect example of "best friends forever." Both being abandoned and looked down upon by their families, Zeke and Cole always had each other's backs growing up, and even when their friendship took a turn for the worse, they were able to push through it and remain best friends right up until the bitter end. Even the imminent end of the world couldn't stop these two from sitting around, watching TV and having a couple beers.

Number 12
Booker & Elizabeth
Series: Bioshock
I will do my best to describe this one without any major spoilers, as the game is still somewhat new. Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth share a special bond. They quickly grow attached to one another and make sure they have each other's backs as they try to escape Columbia. Despite Elizabeth's rescue being a simple job, Booker and Elizabeth become so close, that it becomes difficult for him to think of it as such anymore.

Number 11
Link & Epona
Series: The Legend of Zelda
What is a knight without his steed? Upon their first meeting, Link and Epona share a special bond that becomes unbreakable. While it is hard to describe the relationship, Epona is a loyal companion to Link, evident in Twilight Princess when you can actually speak to her whilst turned into a Wolf.

Number 10
Wario & Waluigi
Series: Super Mario
Not all duos are bent on good. Wario and Waluigi are two best friends who share the strongest emotion anyone could ever have: hatred for the Mario Bros. While Wario and Waluigi have no problem betraying one another to accomplish their goals, they are both okay with this, as they both understand the ways of being a criminal. Their teamwork usually has some quirky, yet dastardly edge to it and it makes them one of the more memorable duos in gaming, despite having such a small role.

Number 9
Mega Man & Rush
Series: Mega Man
They say dog is man's best friend. Thus, Mega Man needed to have a Mega Dog. Rush accompanies Mega Man on all his journeys since Mega Man 3, making sure to come whenever called upon and help Mega Man in whatever way he can. There is a special bond in a boy and his dog, and Mega Man and Rush take that bond to a "mega" level.

Number 8
Joel & Ellie
Series: The Last of Us
Once again, I will do my best not to spoil anything major as this game is somewhat new. Joel and Ellie share a bond similar to Booker and Elizabeth. Joel was hired to accompany Ellie across the country in hopes of delivering her to safety. However, Joel begins to think of Ellie as a daughter, and they begin to rely on each other to the point where they cannot imagine life without one another. Their journey together in an emotional one that rubs off on the player, and makes them hope for a slim chance at a happy ending in such a horrible world they live in.

Number 7
Jak & Daxter
Series: Jak & Daxter
Anyone who has not played a Jak & Daxter game will not know exactly what the bond between these two is. Daxter was Jak's best friend when he was human, but after an unfortunate accident, was turned into a half-otter, half-weasel creature called an otsel. That accident was the start of a range of events that  had Jak and Daxter's destinies intertwined. Despite all the strain and revelations during the events of the games, Jak & Daxter never stop having one another's backs and are truly a gaming duo to behold.

Number 6
Sonic & Tails
Series: Sonic the Hedgehog
Tails came to live with Sonic from when he was a young age, becoming his adoptive younger brother. Ever since, the duo has been inseparable. They are always running around trying to stop some imminent danger, and Sonic's skill mixed with Tails intellect always seems to get the job done.

Number 5
Mario & Luigi
Series: Super Mario
Mario and Luigi are one of the most iconic duos in gaming. However, Luigi is usually the one helping Mario out. He is always helping Mario save his girlfriend, or rescuing him from a painting, or attending his Kart racing tournaments. There are very few instances where Mario actually does anything for Luigi. However, because of Luigi's generous spirit and loyalty to his brother, he completes this duo. While it may be called Super Mario, he'd be nothing without his brother Luigi.

Number 4
Snake & Otacon
Series: Metal Gear
Solid Snake first met Hal Emmerich on Shadow Moses Island. Ever since Snake saved Otacon's life, they have become best friends and brothers. While Snake is in the field, Otacon is always behind the scenes supporting him. There is no resentment. Only teamwork and love for one another. Snake & Otacon display a true friendship that is unbreakable by any warhead.

Number 3
Donkey & Diddy
Series: Donkey Kong
Donkey and his nephew Diddy are a duo that is not to meant with. On multiple occasions, Donkey and Diddy set out by themselves to save their country from multiple different enemies. Even when Donkey is captured, Diddy goes out of his way to make sure that his dear uncle is free again. What Donkey and Diddy share is a true family bond that spans a colourful journey through mountain and meadow.

Number 2
Ratchet & Clank
Series: Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank's story is one that every fan of the series can appreciate. Unlike many of the characters on this list, the friendship between these two characters begins in the first game and is expanded on throughout the series. Despite Clank being a robot, Ratchet treats him like a person, acknowledging that technology can have a soul and be just as good of a friend than anything organic. While their personalities clash at various points in the game, they are great compliments to one another and keep their games funny, interesting and action-packed!

Number 1
Banjo & Kazooie
Series: Banjo-Kazooie
A bear and a bird. Who would have thought such a random, mismatched pairing would turn out to be one of the most loveable duos in all of gaming. Banjo & Kazooie are literally the definition of inseparable. They are exact opposites in every way: Banjo is a carnivore while Kazooie is a herbivore, Banjo is a boy while Kazooie is a girl, Banjo is jolly while Kazooie is sarcastic; yet these two always have one another's backs (in Kazooie's case, literally) and travel together one two wonderful, colourful and fun-filled adventures. Truly, Banjo & Kazooie are the perfect duo in gaming which every gaming duo should strive to be.

  1. What Mario and Luigi not #1! I would have put in Master Chief and Cortana, Marcus and Dom and Professor Layton and Luke over some of those pics. Overall another great list!

  2. Unfortunately, Microsoft franchises are not my forte. That is more of the other members of the site. Therefore, I was unfamiliar with MC & Cortana and Marcus & Dom and was unable to properly implement them into the article.

As for Mario & Luigi not being number 1, as I stated in the article, it feels as though it is always Luigi helping Mario, and rarely ever the other way around. Therefore, I felt that while they are definitely the most iconic, it is hard to call them the best duo when they seem to have less of a dynamic than other duos.
